GCU volleyball falls in 4 to Winona
State
ALAMOSA, Colo. -- Grand Canyon University lost
to Winona State University Thursday in the Best
Western Alamosa Inn/Grizzly Inn Volleyball Classic
hosted by Adams State. GCU lost 30-23, 30-22,
26-30, 31-29.
It dropped
the Antelopes record to 0-2 this season. Winona State is 1-0.
After dropping
the first two games, Grand Canyon took an 18-17 lead in the third game on a
kill by Megan Toth. Winona State went ahead on a Kim Nemcek putaway before
GCU’s Ashley Bright banged home a winner to spot the Antelopes a 22-20
lead.
Grand Canyon
extended its lead to 25-21 on a Whitney Estes
kill. Winona State closed to within two, 28-26,
on Kerry Daly’s kill, but an error and block by GCU’s
Shea Robinson and Audra Slemmer cut Winona State’s match lead to 2-1.
The Antelopes
led 25-23 in Game 4, following an Edington blast.
Winona’s Rudi Balich
served up an ace to push the Warriors in front 27-26. A kill by Toth tied it
at 29, but back-to-back kills by Carmon Stankowski sealed the match.
Edington
led Grand Canyon with 12 kills and 10 digs. Estes
had eight kills, Bright seven kills and six blocks
and Robinson six kills and six blocks. Slemmer
registered 33 assists, and Katie Meyers had 10
digs.
Stankowski
had 19 kills and eight digs for WSU. Jenna Padley
added 16 kills, Daly 11 kills and four blocks,
Susan Clausen 48 assists and Balich 20 digs.
GCU had
10 serve reception errors to WSU’s one.
Grand Canyon
plays Western New Mexico at 8 a.m. Saturday.
