Antelopes lose season opener to Adams St.
ALAMOSA, Colo. -- Grand Canyon Universitys
volleyball team lost its season opener to Adams
State College Thursday, 30-28, 30-23, 30-26.
Grand Canyon (0-1) led 26-21 in Game 1 before
Adams State (1-0) mounted a comeback. The first
game witnessed 10 ties.
GCU led 10-6 in the second game before Adams
State used a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. The
Grizzlies never relinquished control, scoring
seven of the final 10 points to take control
of the match, 2-0.
Sometimes teams send messages to themselves, and thats what we
did tonight, Adams State coach Lindy Mortensen said.
The Antelopes built an 8-3 lead in Game 3 before
ASCs Gina Smith-Meyer served the Grizzlies
to an 8-1 surge and 11-9 advantage. GCU tied
the game at 12-12, but Adams State pulled in
front 21-17. Grand Canyon answered again, knotting
the game at 25-25 on a Shea Robinson kill.
GCUs Shauna Nieman put away a kill to keep
the score tied at 26-26, but a Lopes service
error triggered a 4-0 ASC match-clinching run,
highlighted by two Brittany Muchmore (Peoria,
Ariz.) kills.
Robinson led Grand Canyon with nine kills and
six blocks while hitting .421. Dana Edington
had eight kills, and Nieman six kills and nine
digs. Senior setter Audra Slemmer had 24 assists
for the Lopes.
Adams States Andrea Tuck had 18 kills,
and Muchmore 12. Mary McNeil, a freshman from
Paradise Valley High School, had 39 assists in
her collegiate debut. Muchmore hit .500.
GCU will play Winona State at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
