Grand Canyon women's tennis team's storybook season came to an end Thursday when the Antelopes lost to No. 16 Hawaii Pacific, 5-0 at the NCAA Division II West Regional in Honolulu.
"We knew we had a tough job going in, not only because we were playing the 16th ranked team in the country, but it was these girls' first look at an NCAA Tournament," first-year coach Greg Prudhomme said. "They gave a good fight, and they made me proud of their attitudes."
HPU won all three doubles matches. GCU's Marie-Caroline Legros and Stefanie Griffin battled HPU's Ingrid Cseh and Lauren Shinn for over an hour before falling 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Legros (pictured) was leading Cseh 5-3 (30-love) when Hawaii Pacific secured match point with its two singles wins.

This about-face change season lives on.
Grand Canyon University women's tennis team qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Antelopes will be the No. 7 seed in the West Regional. The Lopes will play Hawaii Pacific on May 8 in Honolulu. The winner of that regional semifinal meets the University of Hawaii at Hilo-Cal State Los Angeles winner for the region championship on May 9.
Grand Canyon bounced back from a 1-10 season last year to go 8-8 in the regular season this year. GCU is 6-6 in NCAA Division II matches.
"At the same time that I'm a little surprised that the program turned from 1-10 last year to 8-8 with a regional berth this year, I was always optimistic that with the team we brought in this year we would start seeing some immediate changes in the results," said GCU first-year coach Greg Prudhomme (pictured). "We still have more work to do in the coming years, which the team looks forward to doing, but it is very rewarding for all of us to have exceeded our and everyone else's expectations."

They accomplished what they came for, these women's tennis players did.
Grand Canyon University beat Notre Dame de Namur University 8-1 Tuesday in Belmont, Calif., to give itself a shot at landing an NCAA Division II Tournament berth. Tuesday's win moved the Antelopes to 8-8 overall, 4-4 in the Pacific West Conference and 6-6 in NCAA II matches, making them eligible to advance to an NCAA West regional for the first time in four years.
"It looks pretty good, but we have to wait for the final word," Lopes coach Greg Prudhomme said. "We put ourselves in position. The girls were excited and determined to come here and give themselves a chance at the NCAA Tournament."
GCU was ranked 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region poll.

Marie-Caroline Legros is glad she's playing her college tennis a long ways from home.
Originally from Alencon, France, Legros (pictured) is one of four freshman who've helped turned Grand Canyon University women's tennis team around this year. Sophomore Amanda Jackson, junior Emily Rios and Super Senior Sheila Johnson have all contributed as well in this media-hit turnaround season.
The Antelopes, who won just one match with a completely different lineup last year, drew within one win of a .500 regular season record Friday in Grand Canyon's 6-3 win over Biola University at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. It was the last home match of the season.
"I'm very happy to be here," said Legros after winning her No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-0 over Brea Roth to improve to 7-6, "and I hope that next season will be good, too. Even if Sheila's not going to be here."
