Antelopes win exhibition over SCC Angela Russell

Grand Canyon women's soccer team beat Scottsdale Community College 1-0 in a scrimmage Wednesday night at GCU Soccer Complex.

Newcomer Angela Russell (pictured) scored on an assist from junior college transfer Karley Nelson.

GCU goalkeeper Shela Robertson had two saves in the shutout.

GCU women sign 6 players

Grand Canyon first-year women's soccer coach Stevie Gill announced the signing of six recruits in his first recruiting class.

The Antelopes signed three players from Pima Community College, including first team National Junior College Athletic Association All-American forward Kaylen Jackson. Pima teammates Nichole Elias and Viviana Zumpano, both Arizona Community College Athletic Conference all-conference selections, also signed with GCU.

Jackson had 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points last season. Elias, a midfielder, had 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points. Zumpano had 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points.

Paradise Valley Community College's Jessica Schartz, an All-ACCAC defender, also signed. Schartz had five goals and six assists for 16 points in 15 games with the Pumas.

Gill named women's soccer coach

Stevie Gill was named Grand Canyon University women's soccer head coach.

Gill served as an assistant coach for six seasons from 2002-07. He played for GCU men's team from 1996-99, earning Second Team Far West Region and Second Team California Collegiate Athletic Association honors as a senior.

Gill was a member of Grand Canyon's 1996 NCAA Division II National Championship team.

"I'm extremely excited about moving the program in a completely new direction," Gill said. "With our new recruiting class coming in we will certainly be contenders."

Women's soccer adds 2 players

Grand Canyon University women's soccer team added two forward/midfielders who have enrolled at GCU this semester.

Toronto area junior college transfers Niki Pidgeon and Tanya Pilon will join the Antelopes next season.

Pidgeon played two years at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ont. Tanya Pilon played one year at Seneca College on the King Campus.

“We are excited on the arrival of both Tanya and Niki, who bring added depth and experience to our forward scoring positions,” said Rich Oesterle, who resigned following the 2007 season but will remain in an administrative position with the team.

Oesterle resigns as women's coach

Grand Canyon University women's soccer coach Rich Oesterle resigned Thursday following one season in charge of the Lady Antelopes. Oesterle spent three seasons as assistant coach before taking over the head coaching job weeks before the start of the season.

He will remain with the program until his replacement is named. GCU Athletic Director Keith Baker said a search for a new coach has begun, and the search would remain open until a new coach is named. Grand Canyon would like to have a coach in place before the end of the Arizona high school season in late January.
