Jobe bows out at NCAA Championships

Jed Jobe's feel-good story came to an end Friday night.

Jobe, a 31-year-old heavyweight, lost 5-3 to Nebraska-Omaha's Anthony Lewis in the second round of the NCAA Division II Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He lost 6-4 in the first round to Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Zach Majocha.

A testicular cancer survivor for the past three-and-a-half years, Jobe's return to wrestling after a nine-year layoff ended at the highest level. He became Grand Canyon's first wrestler to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the program's first year of existence.

"He made a couple mistakes, and you can't do that at this level," Antelopes coach R.C. LaHaye said. "These kids have been training for 15-20 years. He's been raising a family for the last 10 years."

Jobe lays it on line at NCAA Championships

Jobe prepares for NCAA Championships

At 31 years old, Jed Jobe is, in some ways, a novelty. After all, you don't find many guys his age still wrestling in college.

Let alone on the national stage.

But that's where Jobe, a Gilbert, Ariz. native, finds himself as he prepares to wrestle in the NCAA Division II National Championships Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Jobe qualified for the nationals when he took third place at the NCAA West Regional two weeks ago in Las Vegas, N.M.

A heavyweight, Jobe took nine years off after beginning his career at Arizona State University. He returned to the mat in January after serving as an assistant coach in the fall semester.

Jobe named to All-RMAC squad

Grand Canyon heavyweight Jed Jobe was named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling team.

A junior from Gilbert, Ariz., Jobe went 4-1 at the West Regionals/RMAC Championships last weekend, qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, March 14-15.

Jobe, who is 7-6 this season, has won his last four matches. His only loss at the West Regionals came to the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country.

Jobe, who battled injuries in returning to the mat at age 31 in the winter, did not wrestle in the academic year's first semester.

Jobe beats RMAC's best, qualifies for NCAA Championships

Jed Jobe is a fighter, a true warrior. One who's now bleeding Antelope Purple. Jed Jobe

One who's also a national qualifier.

Jobe, Grand Canyon's 31-year-old heavyweight, qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships, winning four straight matches at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships/West Regionals Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M. He advances to the NCAA Championships in two weeks in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

A testicular cancer survivor, dating back three-and-a-half years, Jobe has had his share of injuries to deal with since returning to the mat in the winter after a long layoff. He spent his first two years at Arizona State, but then got married and has since had five kids.

Needless to say, he's had to make sacrifices, but now the results are rearing their head.
