Swimming 7-28-08 Grand Canyon University men's and women's swimming coach Brad Hering resigned to take a position with a Mexican club organization. Grand Canyon is in the process of hiring a new coach. Hering will oversee Aquatica Nelson Vargas, which has 12 different locations throughout Mexico. He is slated to become the chief trainer of the entire club. Hering will work with Mexican National Team swimmers as well elite club and youth swimmers. The purpose of his hiring is to try to strengthen the Mexican National team to an elite Olympic and international swim team. "I want to go there and give them some new energy," Hering said. "They're trying to launch a better elite team for Mexico."

Grand Canyon men's swimming team placed fifth at the Rocky Mountain Invitional Saturday in Denver. The Antelopes women were seventh.
GCU's men had 236.5 points, and the women had 260.5.
Texas Permian Basin won the men's meet with 929.5 points. Host Colorado School of Mines won the women's title with 670.5
GCU double-winner Jessica Coudright was second in Saturday's 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.06. She won the 200 and 500 freestyle races earlier in the meet.
Jessica Brooke was third in the women's 200 butterfly in 2:30.49. Kyle Adler (pictured) was third in the men's 200 fly with a time of 1:59.47.

Charles Woodruff is starting to shine.
Woodruff won the 100-meter freestyle at the Northern Arizona University triangular meet Saturday. He swam a 56.07-second time, beating Concordia Uniersity's Luke Noll by 1.70 seconds. Woodruff also finished second in the 50 free in 24.70, touching the wall .04 seconds after Noll.
Woodruff (pictured) won the same two events at the Cal Baptist meet two weeks earlier.
Kyle Adler swam a 2:36.47 in the 200 IM. He finished .37 seconds behind Concordia's Drew McCracken in the 200 fly. Adler had a time of 2:21.80 in that race.
GCU's 200 medley relay unit of Andy Davies, Woodruff, Adler and Ryan Torii placed second (1:57.56) behind Concordia's quartet.

Grand Canyon's Kyle Adler and Charles Woodruff are peaking at the right time.
Adler won the 200 individual medley at the Cal Baptist men's swimming quad dual meet Saturday. Adler swam a 2:04.74 to win the event. Adler won the 200 butterfly by 7.80 seconds in a dual meet with Biola Friday.
Woodruff (pictured) won the 100 freestyle on Friday. He won the 50 free by three one-hundredths of a second over Biloa's Zach Perkins. Woodruff was third in the 200 IM in the quad dual.
Grand Canyon was outpointed by Biola University 98-49. The Antelopes fell to Chapman University 147-56. GCU lost to Cal Baptist 224-32.
Woodruff was second in the 100 freestyle in 49.82 at the quad dual. Adler was fourth in the 50 butterfly in 25.01 seconds.
"Our three guys were like Gideon," coach Brad Hering said. "It was definitely the best swimming meet of the entire season, Biola in particular. We had some great victories there, even though they beat us by points."

Men's swimmers finish with 14 points at UNLV meet
Grand Canyon University men's swimming team was the top Division II team at the UNLV Winter Invitational. The Antelopes finished with 14 points. GCU placed ahead of Division II Colorado School of Mines, which had 11 points.
GCU's women did not figure into the team scoring.
GCU's Stephen D'Arrigo (pictured) finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke, setting a school record with a 51.60-second time.He bettered his time of 51.98 in the prelims.
Collectively, the Antelopes posted faster times throughout their men's and women's lineup than previously accomplished this year.
"We had about 70 to 75 percent in-season times," GCU coach Brad Hering said. "We swam our personal bests all over the place."
In the prelims, D'Arrigo clocked a 1:55.98 in the 200 backstroke. Kyle Adler swam a 2:01.44 in the 200 butterfly. Charles Woodruff finished the 100 freestyle in 49.06 seconds.
