Todd Wilcox has been named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week, it was announced yesterday by the RMAC office in Colorado Springs, Colo. It is the first such honor ever for a Grand Canyon University wrestler and is doubly impressive because the RMAC is considered the toughest wrestling conference in Division II.
Wilcox (Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), a junior who wrestles at 133 pounds, has started the 2009-10 season with an 8-0 record and two tournament championships (Cal Baptist Open and Embry Riddle Open). At the Embry Riddle Open, he knocked off three wrestlers from Division I Arizona State University, as well as Embry Riddle's Josh Chang to win the title.
Wilcox's eight consecutive victories are a GCU record.

Four Grand Canyon University wrestlers won titles -- more than any other team -- at the Embry Riddle Open today in Prescott, Ariz.
Junior Todd Wilcox (pictured, Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), who won the 133-pound weight class at the California Baptist University Open on Oct. 24,, captured the same title at the Embry Riddle Open. He is off to an 8-0 start this season.
"Todd has started very strong," GCU head coach R.C. LaHaye said. "He needs to keep believing in himself and good things will continue to happen."
Junior Mike Fucci (Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), who as an unattached wrestler was co-champion at 174 pounds at the Cal Baptist Open along with redshirt sophomore Victor Carazo (Modesto, CA/Modesto Junior College), was co-champion, again unattached, in the 165-pound weight class at the Embry Riddle Open along with teammate Stephen Towne (Phoenix, AZ/Menlo College). Towne, a redshirt senior, captured the 165-pound title at the Cal Baptist Open and has started 7-0 this season.

The Grand Canyon University wrestling team held its annual Purple/Black Dual tonight at Antelope Gymnasium, and the Purple squad -- highlighted by Stephen Towne, who was badly bloodied but not bowed in his match against workout partner Mike Fucci at 165 pounds -- defeated the Black squad, 33-12.
Towne, a redshirt senior (pictured, Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) who attended Menlo College in Atherton, Calif. before transferring to GCU, was the 'Lopes' team leader in wins in 2007-08 with 18. His match against Fucci had to be stopped twice after the two wrestlers accidentally butted heads in the first period, opening a deep gash on Towne's forehead. Towne was bleeding so badly that he actually bled through the tape that was wrapped around his head and had to have it replaced. He toughed it out and managed to defeat Fucci (Sacramento, Calif./Sierra College), who will redshirt this season.

The Grand Canyon University wrestling team's theme for the 2009-10 season is "Omaha or Bust," because the Division II National Championships will be held in that Midwestern city on March 12-13, and if results from Saturday's California Baptist University Open are any indication the Antelopes could be well on their way to accomplishing their very lofty goal.
GCU had more individual champions -- four -- than any other team in the tournament.
