One of Arizona's fastest swimmers will be coming to Grand Canyon.
Michael Branning, ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 71 in the nation by CollegeSwimming.com has signed a national letter-of-intent to swim and furhter his education at GCU.
"He's a really talented kid and the prototypical (student-athlete) we're looking for. He's a great kid and a great swimmer," said GCU coach Steve Schaffer.
Branning, a senior at Paradise Valley High School, was the Class 4A-II State Champion in the 50 Freestyle with an automatic high school All-American time of 20.60. His time was faster than any other time from the various Arizona divisions.

REDLANDS, Calif. -- Grand Canyon University's mens' swimming team finished second at the University of Redlands Invitational at Thompson Aquatic Center Saturday.
GCU scored 330.5 points. Host Redlands won with 451.5. Pomona-Pitzer (283) was third and Chapman (120) fourth.
GCU's 200 Freestyle Relay team of Charlie Woodruff (Phoenix, Ariz./Central), Tyler Bhirdo (pictured, Yuma, Ariz./Cibola), Johan Ivarsson (Sundsvall, Sweden/Sundsvall) and Artem Tretiakov (Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk National University) set a new pool record in winning the race in 1:27.72.

FRESNO, Calif. -- Grand Canyon newcomers junior Artem Tretiakov (pictured, Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk National University) and freshman Matt Muchna (Prescott, Ariz./Home School) set new school marks at the Fresno Pacific PCSC Relays and Pentathlon Friday and Saturday.
Tretiakov set a meet record and had an NCAA "B" Cut time with a 46.42 swim in the 100 Freestyle. Muchna set a new school record in the 100 IM (56.96).
Three swimmers placed in the top 10 in Saturday's Pentathlon.

Grand Canyon University juniors Charles Woodruff (pictured, Phoenix, Ariz./Central) and Artem Tretiakov (Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk National University) were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Preseason All-Conference Team, released by the RMAC Thursday.
Woodruff is a former RMAC champion and school record holder in seven events.
Tretiakov is part of an impressive recruiting class that gives GCU high hopes of finishing better than preseason predictions.

Grand Canyon University athletics will be featured on local television and radio Thursday.
Athletics Director Keith Baker (pictured) will be a guest on the Pat McMahon Show to air at 9 a.m. on AZTV7/Cable 13. McMahon was voted Phoenix's "Best Local TV Personality" for 2009 by AZCentral.com's Critic's Choice.
At 11:25 a.m. on the weekly "Grand Canyon University Sports Report" on AM-1060 "The Fan", GCU head men's soccer coach Petar Draksin will be welcomed by popular and personable host Kevin McCabe, a Phoenix sports TV and Radio staple for 20 years.
