Four Grand Canyon University wrestlers won titles -- more than any other team -- at the Embry Riddle Open today in Prescott, Ariz.
Junior Todd Wilcox (pictured, Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), who won the 133-pound weight class at the California Baptist University Open on Oct. 24,, captured the same title at the Embry Riddle Open. He is off to an 8-0 start this season.
"Todd has started very strong," GCU head coach R.C. LaHaye said. "He needs to keep believing in himself and good things will continue to happen."
Junior Mike Fucci (Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), who as un unattached wrestler was co-champion at 174 pounds at the Cal Baptist Open along with redshirt sophomore Victor Carazo (Modesto, CA/Modesto Junior College), was co-champion, again unattached, in the 165-pound weight class at the Embry Riddle Open along with teammate Stephen Towne (Phoenix, AZ/Menlo College). Towne, a redshirt senior, captured the 165-pound title at the Cal Baptist Open and has started 7-0 this season.
"Towne also remains undefeated and is wrestling very well for this early in the season," LaHaye said.
Carazo finished in third place at the Embry Riddle Open.
"Victor lost a close match to Cal State Fullerton's best wrestler at the buzzer," LaHaye said. "He rebounded well and absolutely dominated one of CBU's best kids."
Junior Ryan Becerra (Gilbert, AZ/Cal State-Bakersfield) was the champion in the 197-pound weight class at the Embry Riddle Open. He wrestled unattached in Prescott, and will be eligible to compete for GCU next semester.
"Good to see Ryan get back to wrestling tough like he can," LaHaye said.
"It is good for our kids to get a good amount of early-season matches in to prepare for the long season ahead," LaHaye said.
