Grand Canyon University’s three-time defending Pacific West Conference champion women’s basketball team was selected to win No. 4 in the preseason coach’s poll released Monday at PacWest Media Day.
The Antelopes received seven of the nine first place votes. Dixie State had the other two and was picked second.
“It’s all based on what you’ve done in the past,” said GCU coach Trent May. “It is an honor. Now the challenge is to try to continue our success.”
Two GCU players were selected Preseason All-PacWest including Player of the Year choice Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep).
A first-team all-PacWest choice as a sophomore, Murphy averaged 19.2 points per game, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and led the team in field goal (.504) and free-throw percentage (.829).
Joining Murphy on the squad is senior guard Rosalyn Nelson (pictured, Phoenix, Ariz./Deer Valley). The league player of the year as a sophomore, Nelson is GCU’s all-time leader in assists, steals and field goals made and only the second player in school history to reach 1,000 points. She averaged 15.5 points, 4.9 assists and 3.8 steals last season before having her junior year cut short by injury.
