SAN FRANCISCO -- Freshman Julio Zuniga (pictured, Mexico City, Mex./Trevor Browne/Arizona State) led Grand Canyon University runners for the first time this season, helping lead the 'Lopes to a 6th place finish at the Pacific West Conference Championships at Golden Gate Park Saturday.
Zuniga placed14th and finished the 8K course in 26:55.2, just .5 better than freshman teammate Chris Lewis (Peoria, Ariz./Raymond S. Kellis).
Academy of Art won the event, taking home the school's first-ever PacWest title. GCU was just three points behind fifth-place Notre Dame de Namur. Individually, Academy of Art's Amos Maru took top honors in 25:17.0.
Zuniga's time was the Antelopes best 8K time of the season.
Three other runners broke the 30-minute mark. Sophomore Andrew Zappala (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) finished 33rd (28:53.6). Sophomore Nick Cross (Apache Junction, Ariz./Apache Junction) was 35th in 29:07.6. One spot behind Cross was senior teammate Miles Lindsay (Chula Vista, Calif./Barstow), who wrapped up the course in 29:14.8.
Sophomore T.J. McClarty (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) placed 42nd (31:30.0) and freshman Daniel Ontiveros (Phoenix, Ariz./Camelback) finished 44th (34:19.5).
