Junior midfielder Johnny Vieira (pictured, Amparo, Brazil/Barbosa) scored his first two goals of the season to lead the Grand Canyon University (GCU) men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Chaminade today in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The first-place Antelopes improved to 11-2-1, 8-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The last-place Silverswords fell to 2-10, 1-8.
Chaminade, which lost 5-0 to GCU on Oct. 10 in Phoenix, gave a commendable effort on an overcast and humid day. They held the 'Lopes scoreless until the 41st minute, when Vieira scored an unassisted goal. The Swords continued to play tough, creating several scoring chances of their own in the second half until Vieira took a ball from junior midfielder/forward Juan Mendez (Bolivia/Horizon) and scored in the 76th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Roseban K College) made one save in recording his conference-leading ninth shutout of the season.
GCU, No. 5 in the West Region in the current NSCAA Division II National Rankings, plays Hawaii Pacific on Saturday in Kaneohe, Hawaii.
