Tennis Teams Off to Good Start in California Mandy Prudhomme
The Grand Canyon University men's and women's tennis teams are at Cal Poly Pomona in California playing the Fall ITA Regionals, which run Thursday to Saturday.
They got off to a really good start. Mandy Prudhomme (senior, mother of three and the coach's wife) earned the first win for the 2009-10 team by beating Lydia Hayes of Dixie State 6-3, 6-2. Other singles winners were returning junior Stephanie Haldeman and freshman Kaila Knopf. Haldeman had a bye in the first round and then defeated Jessica Harris of Sonoma State 7-5, 1-6, 10-5 to make it into the round of 16s. Knopf won the first round against Allison Brooks of UC San Bernadino. 
Prudhomme lost in the second round to the No. 1 player from Cal State-Los Angeles, Dori Kiss of Hungary, and Knopf was defeated in the second round to Krystal Mizuguchi of UCSD. Also playing in the tournament were returners Stefanie Griffin and Amanda Jackson. Griffin lost to Brie McClintock of Cal State Stanislaus 6-4, 6-2 and Jackson lost to Kaitlin Wooldridge of Cal Poly 6-2, 6-1. Also dropping a first-round match for GCU was junior-college transfer Ali Brackey, who lost to Courtney Kezerian of Dixie State 6-1, 6-1. 
In doubles, the No. 1 team from GCU, Prudhomme and Haldeman, have a bye into Friday's round-of-16 match. Jackson and Knopf lost in the first round to Kiss and Majzilikova from Cal State-Los Angeles 8-3. Griffin and Brackey lost in the first round to UCSD players Yeung and Mizuguchi 8-2. 
On the men's side, returners Eric Schroeder and Brian Kirby each won a round of singles and are into the round of 16 in doubles. Sophomore Kirby defeated Keith Boggero of Cal Poly 6-3, 6-4. Junior Schroeder defeated James Lee, also from Cal Poly, 2-6, 6-2, 14-12. Schroeder lost to Chapman Chan of UCSD 3-6, 6-1,10-1 in the second round. Kirby lost to No. 1 seed Agnel Peter of BYU Hawaii 6-2, 6-1. Losing in the first round from GCU were Sebastian Guevara, Damon Mays, Jonathan Przybyl and Bryce Melcher. Guevara lost to Sonoma State's Anthony Rollins 6-3, 6-2. Melcher lost to Connor Olson of Sonoma State 6-0, 6-0. Pyzybyl lost to Vincent Nguyen of UCSD 6-3, 6-4, while Mays lost to Salvador Romero of Cal Poly 6-2, 6-2. 
In doubles, Kirby and Schroeder beat Gaynor and Rollins of Sonoma State 9-8 (5). Melcher and Mays lost in the first round to Vu and Keefer of Sonoma State 8-0, while Przybyl and Guevara lost to the UCSD team of Fellow and Ling 8-3.
"I'm really happy with the first day of matches," GCU Coach Greg Prudhomme said.  "Our players played hard with great attitudes. The promise of the new players and experience of the returners should help make a successful season for the 'Lopes tennis teams this year."
