January will be a busy month for the Grand Canyon University (GCU) wrestling team, with home dates against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Jan. 6) and Colorado State University-Pueblo and California Baptist University (Jan. 15), as well as the Grand Canyon Duals (Jan. 23; other teams include San Francisco State University, Colorado School of Mines and Embry-Riddle). Those three dates highlight GCU's 2009-10 wrestling schedule, announced today by head Coach R.C. LaHaye.
The third-year program has its sights set on the NCAA Division II National Championships March 12-13 in Omaha, Neb.
GCU's season begins on Oct. 24 at the Cal Baptist Open in Riverside, Calif. The Antelopes return home for the Purple/Black Dual on Nov. 4, then hit the road for the Embry-Riddle Open (Nov. 7 at Prescott) and Cal State-Fullerton Open (Nov. 21 at Fullerton, Calif.) and matches against Embry-Riddle (Nov. 28 at Prescott) and Arizona State University (Nov. 29 at Tempe).
The Asics Southwest Showdown (Dec. 11-12), a prestigious high school tournament hosted by GCU, is sandwiched between the Newberry Duals (Dec. 5 at Newberry, S.C.) and Desert Duals (Dec. 20 at Las Vegas) in December.
Other January dates include the Midwest Classic (Jan. 1-2 at Indianapolis), UVU Open (Jan. 9 at Orem, Utah) and Mile High Collegiate Open (Jan. 17 in Prescott), as well as matches against Adams State College and Mesa State College of Colorado (Jan. 29 at Grand Junction, Colo.) and Chadron State College (Jan. 30 at Grand Junction, Colo.).
There are three dates in February -- Highlands University of New Mexico (Feb. 5 at Las Vegas), University of Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State University (Feb. 17 at Hays, Kan.), and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships (Feb. 27 at Alamosa, Colo.)
