Grand Canyon 8th in nation in batting average

Grand Canyon University's softball team ranked eighth in the nation out of 200 teams in team batting average (.345) according to the final NCAA Division II statistical report released Wednesday. Randi Johns ranked 58th in the nation with a .418 batting average

Bowie State's .409 batting average led NCAA Division II.

Grand Canyon ranked 21st in runs scored at 6.2 per game. Bowie State was tops at 10.5. GCU ranked 35th in slugging percentage (.469). Metro State was first at .636. The Antelopes were 36th in double plays per game at 0.36. Dixie State was first at 0.56.

GCU senior Tana Holtorf ranked third nationally in the toughest to strike out category. She struck out just four times in 219 at-bats. Eastern New Mexico's Alexis Mayo-Otis and West Virginia Wesleyan's Trisha Thurston shared the nation's top honor in that category with a mark of 80.

Grand Canyon senior Randi Johns (pictured right) ranked 58th in the nation in batting average after hitting .418 in 2009. Bowie State's Kelley Alexander was the nation's leader with a .531 average.

Johns ranked 11th in sacrifice flies with five. GCU senior teammate Yasmeen Watkins was 26th with four. Alderson-Broaddus' Haley Mullen ranked first with 13.

Yasmeen Watkins ranked 17th in the nation in RBI per gameWatkins (pictured left) ranked 17th in runs batted in per game at 1.22. Johns was 35th at 1.05. Tuskegee's Tameria Brown was first at 1.97. Johns drove in 249 runs in her career, which ranks third in NCAA Division II history.

Johns ranked 37th in walks per game at 0.59. She drew 38 free passes this season. Abilene Christian's Jessica Shiery was the nation's leader at 1.21 walks per game.

Johns also ranked 44th in hit by pitches per game at a 0.14 clip. She was plunked nine times this season. Johns was hit by 42 pitches in her career, which is tied for third in NCAA Division II history.

GCU went 37-27, finishing third in the Pacific West Conference for the third straight year. The Antelopes' 37 wins set a school season record. Lock Haven (Penn.) won the NCAA Division II national championship, beating Indianapolis, 2-0.
